When Red Daffodil approached us, they were tackling a subject that required both precision and empathy: understanding nutrition and fragility among people aged 60+. It was a brief that sat firmly in the “handle with care” category, and exactly the kind of challenge Zest is built to support.
Their research needed to reach individuals whose health made them vulnerable, and the methodology required a thoughtful blend of in-home, face-to-face approaches: gentle 1-2-1 conversations, duo interviews with carers and their friend/relative, and small friendship groups built to encourage easy conversation. Each session brought its own character, its own sensitivities, and its own logistical demands.
We worked closely with Allyson Binnie and her colleague to design a recruitment and scheduling process that genuinely protected participants’ wellbeing. This wasn’t just recruiting to spec, it was mapping out timings, routes, and transitions between sessions to ensure every visit was achievable, comfortable, and respectful. For people living with frailty, those details matter.
From first contact to final interview, we handled the process with the same care we’d want for our own families. Respondents felt safe, informed, and supported; and Ally and her team felt confident in both the quality and integrity of the sample.
The insights Red Daffodil gathered went far beyond the brief. They uncovered the lived realities of aging, the subtle markers of frailty, and the small but meaningful ways support can shape someone’s independence.
